Chinese Mutual Aid Association

We are the Chinese Mutual Aid Association (CMAA). We offer a variety of services, including job placement and job training, citizenship, and family individual literacy program. Despite our name, we serve immigrants and refugees from all over the world, including Asia, Africa, and the former Soviet Union.

What Volunteers Do

ESL Tutoring: We currently have a need for tutors to teach students in a one-on-one or group setting. We match students and tutors based on a variety of factors. One of the most obvious is the availability of time. Tutors and students typically meet once a week for about one-and-a-half to two hours at a time. Weekday tutors are always in demand; however, all regular availability is valuable. We ask that all tutors give a minimum of a six-month commitment. A majority of our volunteer tutors had no experience prior to CMAA, so don’t worry.

CMAA has a variety of training avenues for people who have never tutored before. Our sister organization runs monthly training programs, and we also utilize an approach that includes observation and one-on-one lesson planning with an experienced tutor. We are personally available by phone, email, or in person to answer any questions you may have.
